Hepatitis A and B are viruses that infect the liver, causing mild to severe illness.

Hepatitis A is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water or through direct contact with an infectious person.

Hepatitis B is transmitted through contact with infected blood and bodily fluids such as through sexual contact, sharing of needles, mother-to-child transmission and blood transfusions. It can cause lifelong infection, cirrhosis (scarring) of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death.
